At not quite 6'0', not quite 175 pounds, he looks more a member of the grounds crew than of the pitching corps. With a semi-nimbus of curls emanating from beneath his cap, he cuts a figure that is equal parts defiant and hilarious, like a Napoleonic Max Patkin gazing angrily in at the signs.

And he throws a fastball scarcely more stirring to dustmites than to minor league batters. But he has a broad-sweeping curve and an off-the-table forkball, the kind of out-pitch most hitters say just isn't fair.

And they're right. Breaking Balls is the story of a sharp-tongued junkball pitcher from New York who, surrounded by vastly superior athletes and thriving on guile, wisecracks his way through the Northwest timber towns of the low minor leagues.

The plot wasn’t over the top; it was almost whimsical in parts. This book wasn’t nearly as cruel as the first set of books. Holmberg is quickly becoming one of my favorite fantasy authors.

I can’t wait for her next release. She's smart as a whip, and she's strong in her own way, but she doesn't suffer from the same quick-to-jump-into-trouble nature as Ceony did. She's logical and methodical, and a very good protagonist. While the twist wasn't all that shocking (I mean, we'd figured out the twists pretty early on, hadn't we?.wink.), the magic was a fun ride, and the story had some cool ideas. All in all, I enjoyed it.

He's been stumped for something to showcase this year, but as luck would have it, it seems like Alvie was just the person he needed to make things happen. Together they work on an invention that will shake the magical and medical world. However, there are issues that arise that no one anticipated, and Alvie's got to find a way out of a very tough situation.Alvie is an absolutely wonderful character.

She's smart, ambitious, confident (except when it comes to cute boys) and is a giant clutz. She's adorable and everything you'd expect from a main character in this series. Magician Praff also amazed me. He is so supportive and attentive to Alvie, and I loved their dynamic together.

The supporting characters that Alvie builds relationships with are adorable, I love her interactions with them. For fans of the trilogy, this has everything you love about the series. There is magic, there is love, and there is mischief. There's also the painful feeling at the end that this simply wasn't enough, and you need more!! One of my favourite lines happened to be the last and it sums her up perfectly; After all,it wasn't about the magic. It was about the discovery. She's an American too, brought to the UK as part of a program to encourage foreign students to take their apprenticeships there.Expanding the world like that allowed us further glimpses into how this world fits magic alongside technology - and though one character dismisses technology as 'the uneducated man's magic', Alvie is quick to correct her.

Her own father is a co-creator of the light bulb, a purely technological marvel even in this world. But things like long range travel and communication by mirror, left mostly unexplored in the last three books, were an absolute delight in this one.An absolute delight is probably the best way I could ever describe this book. Alvie's sense of discovery and marvel at the possibilities afforded by the chance to study and learn were absolutely contagious to me as the reader. The wait for the next book is going to be a long one!I received a free digital copy in return for an honest review.

The Plastic Magician is set in the same world as the Paper Magician, but with a new lead character. Alvie is an American girl, who dreams of becoming a polymaker, a plastic magician. Although, the book is an American writing about London and England, all in the American style, so it can be a bit jarring for a native. But other than that, the style is easy and readable.I liked this book, it was an easy read and I found the characters enjoyable. It was interesting to see London and the magical world from a different perspective than we did in the first book.

Alvie is also very geeky and clumsy, which was a nice touch I think, she was definitely a completely different character from Ceony of the first novel - although, she does appear!Sadly though, I don't think this book lives up the original trilogy. The pacing was bad! It felt like nothing really happened until about the 70% mark on my Kindle, which is a LOT of build up and filler. But that being said, I never wanted to stop reading and I was invested enough to want the story to end well.

I will definitely be liking onto what other books the author has written. Note: While this is listed as part of, this novel can stand on its own.

However, the book has not been released yet, so read at your own risk.I really enjoyed revisiting the much beloved world of the Paper Magician in this triumphant sequel to the original trilogy. In the Plastic Magician, main character American-German Alvie Brechenmacher, delves into the newly discovered magic of Polymaking, the magical discipline of plastic, and finds herself across the pond in England, apprenticing with world-renowned Magician Marion Praff in what is another quirky and dear adventure. This book has everything, a marvelous heroine, romance, magic, creative world-building, action and mystery, and an all-around positive message.I love that Alvie is a sensible slacks-wearing American, complete with an accent, face-eating glasses and untamable hair. She is clearly a genius, adding large sums in her head, but is helplessly clumsy and so devoted to her new magic that she forgets what time it is. Alvie also has a heart of gold, choosing to volunteer in a hospital and using her new magic to create a prototype plastic arm for a friend who lost her arm in a factory accident. She is truly every bit as lovable and feels just as authentic and relatable as her Paper Magician counterpart, Ceony Twillwho even makes a wonderful surprise cameo or two that fans of the series will just love.I also adore her romance with Paper Magician, and all around cutie, Bennet. The very description of the two’s developing romance makes the reader feel butterflies!

“His eyes find hers and he smiles a bright smile that made Alvie feel like a magician already or perhaps something even better.” It is purely delightful that Alvie found an Englishman who loves her for all of the things that make her Alvie, something that didn’t get her many suitors back home. He forgives her for missing their dates due to working on her Magic, doesn’t blame her for running off mid-conversation to jot down a new idea or for wanting to take apart his Benz’s engine to simply appreciate it, and genuinely cares for her just as she is. Bennet even informs her early on that he had a feeling he’d never be bored with her. I thought it was utterly adorable that he told her not to wear a skirt to his graduation ceremony because “it just isn’t Alvie.”Alvie’s relationship with his sister, Ethel, the one for whom Alvie is inventing the Plastic arm prototype, is just as precious. As a reader with multiple disabilities, this scene between these two really touched me:“Ethel took her hand.

‘You’re a good friend Alvie. Even without all the magic.’ Alvie squeezed back. “’You are too, Ethel. Even without the arm.’ The older woman’s eyes watered just a bit. “I think that, today that’s something I needed to hear.”This exchange demonstrates how magic touches all of the relationships in the book, but isn’t defined by it.

In the magical world of this book and the others in the series, people travel by mirrors, send mail via Folded mail birds, text each other via Mimic spells, and see their imaginations come to life not on movie screens, but through Imagidomes. I love how Alvie’s growing up in America, showed the different laws traditions, and attitudes towards magic throughout different countries.

For example, in England public transportation via mirrors is not allowed, but in the United States it is quite the norm. And as Alvie grew up as the daughter of the true inventor of the light bulb, she has a unique and grounded viewpoint on how technological advances may affect magic. But these are just two of the many ways author Charlie N. Holmberg builds a complex and immersive world that I would personally love to inhabit.Though the book emphasizes that all Magicians should, “Treat their magic with respect and loyalty and it will do likewise. Leave this world a better place than it was when you entered it,” Alvie soon finds that not all Magicians uphold this creed. There is intense competition for new discovery, especially in the newest magic—Polymaking—leading to violence, and the stealing of ideas. I love that in the face of danger, Alvie is able to use her intelligence to stay quick on her feet, rescue herself repeatedly, and is able to put together the pieces to solve a crime even before the Police.

She’s not even traumatized by her brushes with danger, but instead uses her experiences to hypothesize an entirely new field of magic, which I have a feeling we’ll be seeing a lot more of in future installments. After all she says, “It isn’t about the magic. It is about the discovery.”And if you haven’t yet discovered the magic of the Paper Magician series, I urge you to do so at once.Connect with Me. While there, they work on a ground-breaking discovery to show at a magician convention. She makes friends, finds romance, and gets into some trouble.I did appreciate that the main character is 20 years old. While I enjoy YA, sometimes it's nice to read about characters closer to my age.

It could be considered a 'New adult' book in that way, as the main character, Alvie, is 20 years old and moves away from home to further her studies (not unlike the typical college experience). Speaking of Alvie, she is absolutely adorable. She's highly logical; she thinks in numbers, math and equations.

She knows she's very intelligent, but this is usually a turn-off for guys, who she doesn't have much luck with. She doesn't like her appearance and her appearance is often described as being a bit drab and unkempt. This sort of sucked for me because I too have plain brown hair, brown eyes and large glasses. So, thanks, Alvie.

Thanks for that. The writing was nice and adorable, just like Alvie. Although one small thing bothered me.

She called her parents 'mater' and 'pater' and I had no idea why. I thought she may have a German accent, but she's been described as having an American accent. Also, she was able to say other 'th' words clearly. When I looked up the words, I found that they were British slang, but she had been using those words before she lived in Britain, so it confused me.

It wasn't a big deal or anything, just something which distracted me a bit as I read.Ultimately, it was a sweet, cozy book. There are some parts of the book which are a little dark guns, abduction and violence , but for the most part it was a fun read. Definitely more so than what I typically read. I did predict much of the mystery and small twists, but I didn't mind. I wasn't reading it for its mystery.

I actually haven’t read any of the books in the original series but after being intrigued by the blurb for the book and seeing that it was perfectly okay to read without reading the others, I thought, why not give it a go?Who, What, Where?TPM is about a young, American, apprentice magician named Alvie Brechenmacher. Alvie is fascinated by Polymaking – a newly discovered branch of magic which deals with the manipulation of plastics. When she’s offered the opportunity to apprentice under the famous magician, Marion Praff, she packs her bags and heads to London. Here, she comes up with an innovative idea for a new polymaking project which she and Mg. Praff believe will help them to win the annual convention.

The only problem is that Mg. Praff’s rival, Mg. Ezzell is determined to come out on top this year and may be directly trying to sabotage them. Why You Should Read ItIt’s Short & LightIf you’re on the lookout for something quick, straightforward and light in tone, TPM is a good pick. The book itself is only around 230 pages long and the writing is very easy to follow.

There’s no heavy, dark undertones to the story – what you see is essentially what you get. This means it’s a good way to break up other denser and emotionally draining reads. The book almost reminds me of a Disney movie in that the characters are either good or bad and the plot follows the path you’d expect.Sweet CharactersAll of the “good” characters in this book are sweet and likeable. Alvie, herself, is smart, a little bit awkward, resourceful, and very hardworking. She can be scatterbrained at times but she has big dreams and is easy to relate to, especially in her preference for pants, bad hair days, and confusion regarding boys (girl, we’ve all been there).

Aside from our lead, we also have Alvie’s romantic interest, Bennett, his sister and the inspiration behind Alvie’s project, Ethel, and Mg. Praff himself. All three of these characters have some nice interactions with Alvie and serve to add social elements to her London world.Science & MagicOne of the most interesting parts of TPM is Holmberg’s magic system. It relies on language, the use of specific materials, and has a scientific feel to it which goes very well with the industrial era setting. Here, magic isn’t just about power or fun, it’s about blending it with technology to make things that advance society in some way or have a real 'wow' factor.

We have paper messenger birds, mirror portals, universal keys, plastic that changes to reflect real-life images, and a whole bunch of other things.I appreciated the fact that magic was more of a process in this book. You have to think about the effect certain words will have on your base materials and layer spells over each other in sequence using correct timing to achieve your desired result. Magic in this world is also still in progress, with magicians learning new words/spells as they go.Why You Might Want to Skip ItSurface LevelI mentioned above that TPM was a very easy and straightforward read. The problem with this was, for me, it often translated to boring. While the characters are lovely, they’re also a bit two-dimensional and I have difficulty trying to find words to describe them other than “sweet” or “nice” or simply by their role in the book.

The villain, Mg. Ezzell suffers from the same problem – he’s simply the “bad guy” who wants to beat Mg. There’s no real development there and he feels largely like the moustache-twirling villain of old cartoons.PredictableFor most of the book I kept hoping there’d be some kind of twist or deviation from the obvious plot path laid out for us early on: Alvie goes to England, Alvie studies and comes up with an idea, idea to be presented at convention, bad guy attempts to steal idea, plot foiled, happily ever after.

It didn’t have to be an extremely shocking variation, just something to grab my attention. Unfortunately, I was left wanting, with the plot moving from point A to B to C exactly as expected and somehow making those 233 pages feel like a slog at times. Even the romance between Alvie & Bennett, whilst having its cute moments, overall felt unengaging, making me almost wish that Bennett would somehow do a Hans from Frozen and turn out to be working with Ezzell. Alas, no such luck.As a light, fluffy, and brief fantasy read, The Plastic Magician succeeds. However, if you go into this book looking for richness and depth with regards to characters, plot or themes, you’re likely to be disappointed. Those seeking something fun, easy-going, with an interesting approach to magic and a fairly endearing heroine, will probably leave fairly satisfied.

For my part, unfortunately, as much as I wanted to love this one, I found myself wishing it would hurry up and finish so I could move on to something more interesting.2.5 Stars.Thank you to 47North and Netgalley for this eARC in exchange for an honest review. If you’re familiar at all with The Paper Magician series, that helps a great deal with the background world-building going into this new book, although you don’t necessarily have to read those first. I do encourage it however, because they’re delightful books. The Plastic Magician does a great job continuing on with the world of the earlier books, but it works great as a stand alone story. The plot on this one is a bit of a slow build but the story isn’t that long so it didn’t feel bogged down at all. This is very much a slice of life story and we spend a lot of time getting to know Alvie as a student, as a friend, and as an inventor.Charlie N. Holmberg’s writing really comes to life with her characters. Alvie is such a lovely character and she feels incredibly realistic.

She’s driven, smart and resourceful, but also can be prone to distraction and gets absorbed in her work. Her mind works in creative ways which allows her to think outside the box and this helps her more than once throughout the story. Alvie’s also loyal and a great friend. I wish I had a friend like Alvie!

I am also glad we got to see Bennet again. He’s so unlike Alvie in some ways, where she’s exuberant and extroverted he’s more shy and reserved. The contrast between her personality and his made for a great dynamic. Even Magican Praff was a delight. Such a great teacher, always encouraging and giving as well. I loved seeing Alvie and Mg.

Praff working together on projects–such a great team.If I have one complaint about the book, and I can’t even really say it’s a complaint because I didn’t mind at all, is that the villain was more than a bit mustache-twirly. But honestly that worked perfectly with the tone of the story. The other characters are so lovely that you need a sort of dastardly foe to clash with them. The Plastic Magician is a lovely slice of life fantasy novel about a girl learning what she can do with her magic and making friends along the way. Check it out if it sounds like something you might enjoy!More reviews at. The best in the series!I wrote a long review but goodreads crashed on me so I'm just gonna keep it simple (thanks goodreads).World: The world is charming and effortless. There is no info dumping and Alvie is a good point of view to introduce readers to the world.

The magic system is fun.Story: Well paced and character driven. Romance was also much more natural than original books.Characters: Alvie is strong character with strong personal voice. She's not overly cliche with nerd girl tropes but stands on her own. I love her banter with people and her personal thoughts. Rest of the cast were there for the sake of being there, but this is not their story so it's fine. Villain was pointless and poorly written.I like the series quite a bit and I like the focus on discovery and characters.Onward to the next book!

Alvie is smart and talented and I hope we get to see more of her.The Random Thoughts:The Score Card:4 Stars. 3.5This book didn't grab me quite as quickly as the first book in the series, and it took me a little while to warm to the characters. I liked Alvie well enough, and her charming awkwardness, but for awhile the story seemed to be just about that and while she was quirky and all, I get a little bit tired of the thing.I do appreciate a female character who is more interested in work and comfort than on the latest fashion trends and all - especially since she didn't seem to put ot 3.5This book didn't grab me quite as quickly as the first book in the series, and it took me a little while to warm to the characters. I adore Emery Thane with all my heart. But this book just didn't really cut it. I knew it wasn't about the characters I got used to, so I don't think that was the issue.

I think I'm upset about all the lost potential tbh. While I wasn't a fan of the new heroine - just doubt anyone thinks like that and it's another case of writer tries to write about immigrant experience and gets it Read for the Popsugar Reading Challenge 2018: a book published in 2018.Disclaimer: I love The Paper Magician series. I liked her intelligence and drive for discovery.I'm so sad that we barely get to know the secondary characters, though. For some reason I am most disappointed that there's barely any hint to Mg. Praff's personality?? Like ffs, he is Alvie's mentor, so she.must.

have gotten to know him! Same with Bennett, Alvie's boyfriend (literally all I know about him is that he has sunshine hair. Wtf), or Ethel, Bennett's sister. Cheated. The villain and the whole intrigue were a bit lame. SO predictable. Also, I didn't understand how some parts were not really related, only retrospectively in a few sentences (like Alvie and Bennett's date), but other stuff dragged on?:/ It didn't feel balanced. Also, that Ceony and Emery cameo. Honestly, only recognised them because of the mention of the indigo coat and C's orange hair.

They were unrecognisable otherwise. So, all in all, could have been really interesting with a stronger intrigue and a better villain, more defined characters. A pleasant return, but felt lackingI think this series is meant for young adults, but (as an adult) I thoroughly enjoyed the first trilogy, and this was a pleasant return to the works of material magicians. I found this one lacking, though, with my only tangible observation being that I was expecting a more complex plot twist. The book also ends with what could be solid closure, so I can't tell if she'll be writing more with this new set of characters. I'd love to see a more in depth tie-in with the previous characters and perhaps the master magician concept, although this book introduces a similar concept that could be fodder for expansion. I'll definitely keep reading, if more books are in store.
